5 Key Takeaways From the Q1 2024 Indiana Abortion Reports

1. 25% of Abortions Performed on Babies Over 21 weeks

12 of the 45 abortions that occurred in Q1 were performed on babies 21 weeks gestation or older. This is alarmingly over double the amount of abortions that happened on babies this old from the previous data–the Q4 report for 2023 lists only 5 babies aborted over 21 weeks.

2. One New Hospital Performing Abortions

Of the 8 hospitals listed as performing abortions in the first part of 2024, one of them is new. Memorial Hospital in South Bend performed one surgical abortion in Q1.

They had previously performed at least one abortion in 2022, but not since then. Without access to the individual TPR, we cannot see which doctor performed the abortion.

3. A Majority of Justification for Abortions is Lethal Fetal Anomaly

28 of the 45 abortions that happened in Q1 were done so because of “lethal fetal anomaly.” 16 abortions were for “serious health risk to the mother” and 1 was for “rape/incest.”

Without access to individual TPRs, we cannot see what conditions the physicians considered fatal.

4. Retained Tissue Remains the Leading Reported Complication

There were 13 cases of “incomplete abortion” or “retained tissue,” accounting for 68% of reported complications in Q1 2024. The last report from Q4 2023, listed 14 cases of incomplete abortion out of 25 total complications.

5. Riley Hospital Becomes Indiana’s Leading Abortion Provider

Riley Hospital performed 22 of the 45 abortions from Q1 of 2023, well more than any other hospital. In Q4 of 2023, they performed 21 of 46.

While this information is helpful in identifying trends in the Indiana abortion industry, no enforcement measures can be taken from this because of the lack of access to individual TPRs.
